34 ORCHARD ISSUE 6 IS HERE!

A shocking occurrence unmasks a professor and a ne’er-do-well covers up the truth. A machine exposes the past and lies linger between a dinner’s courses. A bijou boogeyman unleashes a daughter’s rage while ordinary colors and unusual mattresses strip away the pretense of composure. In Issue 6, seventeen artists brood on the secrets we keep, and what happens when they are exposed.

Autumn 2022 features a dark tale from India, disturbing looks at real-life events, emotional pieces by newer voices and scary stories by names that frequently haunt anthology tables of contents. Why, even the cover photo has an unsettling tale behind it! Our sixth issue is what you’ll want waiting when you take your break from prepping for the busy holiday season.

BARBARIC YAWP WRITES “SKELETONS RATCHETS TENSION, IS ‘SHARP AS VAMPIRE TEETH’”

BoneWorld Publishing’s John Berbrich, editor of Barbaric Yawp, has heralded Skeletons in the Swimmin’ Hole in the literary magazine’s most recent issue, noting the writing “is clear as a moonlight on a cloudless night, the description as sharp as vampire teeth.”

“This present book deals quite effectively with ghosts and various spooks, some of which are located in the human mind…Kristi knows how to ratchet up the tension,” he writes.

The review is in Vol. 15, Number 1 Barbaric Yawp’s Bookbeat column.

Barbaric Yawp first published my short story “Ghost Light” several years ago and is published quarterly. It features fiction, poetry, book reviews, and more—don’t miss out. A yearly subscription is $15.00 and it’s well worth it.

KUDOS FOR “PAISLEY” IN FROM THE MARROW

My short story “Paisley Surprise”—a version of which I printed in very limited run in 2009—was recently reviewed and recommended in BoneWorld Publishing’s From the Marrow Issue #79 (June 2010). It got the thumbs up!

In From the Marrow, BoneWorld’s publisher John Berbrich reviews, recommends, and provides ordering info for his small press picks in everything from horror and speculative to poetry, philosophy and beyond. John, a poet, is also Editor-in-Chief of Barbaric Yawp.

Berbrich gave “Paisley” high marks—and recommends many other fun reads (I’m definitely planning on purchasing a copy of something called Chum). You can read the blurb here (it may only be up for a couple of weeks until he posts the next issue) and while you’re at it, check out everything else on the list, including Puddinghouse Publication’s Love in the time of Electrons (about an Internet romance) and Superiority Complex Press’ poetry collection The Book of Nate.
