DARK DISCUSSIONS gets classical with 1963’s JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS
A little ways back, Dark Discussions ran a contest in its Facebook group — what movies from the past would listeners like to hear us cover? One of the winners (it was a tie) was 1963’s Jason and the Argonauts.
Since it seems like Hollywood has figured out (finally, and we’re not complaining!) that horror films do well in the winter months, we’ve had so many new releases to cover we haven’t had time to get to either of our winners. We got lucky when logistics hung us up for a week, so we decided a trip down memory lane (and into the dusty annals of our brains to see what we remember about the myths we read in high school) would be the perfect fill-in.

The best part of Jason, of course, is the fantastic monsters created by Ray Harryhausen. One of the images that haunted my childhood was Talos awakening.

Dark Discussions meets Aston Elliot and does the Bucket List thing
In Dark Discussions Episode 265 (hard to believe that I think this year we’ll break 300 episodes!), we had the opportunity to talk with Australian actor Aston Elliot, most recently known for his role in Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla (catch our episode on that film here). Then, we take the plunge into our Bucket Lists–each of us had to watch a horror film (mostly classic or quintessential to the genre) that somehow we’d never seen. Getting in on Dark Discussions: September 2016

1978’s Piranha was the final film of Dark Discussions’ KILLER FISH FEST.
September’s such an interesting month, because, here in New England, it’s a fluid transition between summer and autumn.
Dark Discussions‘ topics for September were just as transitory, taking us from the final days Read the rest of this entry
10 movies that wouldn’t be scary if you watched them on mute
Horror films rely on all sorts of tricks to induce their frights: jump scares, atmosphere, and creepy or gory visuals. They also rely on something else that’s often overlooked: sound.
Sound, including music, can play a key role in how scary something is. Consider, for example, Robert Wise’s 1963 The Haunting; one of the most terrifying moments in that film is the scene in which the girls huddle in their room as an infernal banging roams the hall. We never see the ghost; we simply hear it—and if one turned down the volume and watched that scene without any noise, it would just look like two women making goofy faces in a room.
That said, here are ten films that rely so heavily on sound or dialogue Read the rest of this entry
Starts this week!
Dark Discussions takes the plunge and dives deep into six films of aquatic terror in our Killer Fish Fest!
We are not going to tell you which films we’re going to cover; you’ll have to find out as we go, but all of our episodes released in August will have to do with some kind of scary aquatic horror movie.
New episodes of Dark Discussions are released every Thursday on I-Tunes, Stitcher, and at http://www.darkdiscussions.com/. DARK DISCUSSIONS on THE CONJURING 2; resources for exploring the story behind the film
Nathan Schoonover (occult specialist, paranormal investigator, co-host of The Ghostman & Demon Hunter Show and my husband) joined us on Dark Discussions for an in-depth look at The Conjuring 2. We had a total blast! We discuss Amityville, Ouija boards, the real Enfield Poltergeist, DBox (and if you don’t know what that is you’ll just have to check it out) and more!
You can listen through I-Tunes and Stitcher or you can simply download it right from the Dark Discussions website here: http://www.darkdiscussions.com/Pages/podcast_238.html
Below, a very basic (I do mean VERY basic) list of resources in case you’re interested in exploring the real stories behind the film. This has already Read the rest of this entry
DARK DISCUSSIONS spends time with NINA FOREVER

DARK DISCUSSIONS Episode 227 – NINA FOREVER montage by Philip Perron
Pomegranates, narcissism, Greek mythology and what-would-you-do-if-your-dead-girlfriend-literally-showed-up-in-your-bed-every-time-you-had-sex-scenarios (boy did the guys have fun with that one) ruled on last week’s Nina Forever episode of Dark Discussions, a (mostly horror) genre podcast (What’s also fun to mention is that Read the rest of this entry
SPECIAL: DARK DISCUSSIONS Nominated for Rondo Award – Vote through April 10th!

I’d have posted this sooner, but I just found out. On February 17, the official ballot for the FOURTEENTH ANNUAL RONDO HATTON CLASSIC HORROR AWARDS was posted, and the Dark Discussions podcast—which hasn’t only been my favorite since 2011, I’ve guested several times and am now part-time co-host—has been nominated in Category #17, Best Multi-Media Horror Site (which feature podcasts).
While this is awesome, the Rondos are just something that should be on every horror fan’s radar, and every horror fan should go and vote. This year there are 21 choice categories and 6 write-in categories.

DARK DISCUSSIONS faces THE REVENANT

The Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle The Revenant has gotten a lot of buzz—but is it actually any good?
There were a lot of varying opinions regarding this on the most recent episode of Dark Discussions, which is up now: http://www.darkdiscussions.com/Pages/podcast_216.html.
My late father was extremely interested in the Mountain Men and this period in American History spawned by the explorations of Lewis and Clark, so I went into this film with a little bit of knowledge – mostly, though, about keelboats and beaver conservation, to be honest. I’ve chosen what I’d consider reputable resources in case you’d like to know Read the rest of this entry
