The New England Horror Writers had a table at the Hanover Spring Craft Fair to benefit the First Congregational Church’s Food Pantry in Hanover, MA, this past Saturday. We had a great time (and I sold some Skeletons in the Swimmin’ Hole Tote Bags–sweet.)! Enjoy!

I’ll have copies of Skeletons in the Swimmin’ Hole—Tales from Haunted Disney World, In Poe’s Shadow, Love Notes, and Wake the Witch on hand. The event runs from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at17 Silver Street (off Route 139 and Main Street) in Hanover and admission is $1 or free with a donation to the food pantry. Our first rock came from Stacey Longo and Jason Harris in Hebron, CT, on January 27. Stacey came over for the night to work on our forthcoming short story collection.
Yes, I know it’s a strange request. Nathan and I are having an intimate wedding up at Howe Caverns on September 15, 2012, and because many of our friends and fans can’t join us, we’d like you to be there in spirit.
Our wedding’s theme is Journey to the Center of the Earth, and we’d like our decorations to include rocks from all over. Find a small (no bigger than quarter-sized) rock from your yard (please, nothing haunted) and mail it to us. We’ll consider it your “good wish” and add it to one of the tablescapes, and we’ll list your name and where the rock is from, as well as the date we received it, in our program. Stacey’s short horror fiction has appeared in several scary anthologies, among them Malicious Deviance and Daily Bits of Flesh. She’s best known, though, for her zombie fiction—like “Wedding Day Blues,” in which a bride refuses to let her groom’s newly-dead status ruin her big day. Her zombie stories have been featured in the anthologies Zombidays: Festivities of the Flesheaters, Rapid Decomposition, and Hell Hath No Fury.

“SLOW GRILL” 2011 RUNNER-UP IN SCARY DAIRY CONTEST

My flash fiction piece “Slow Grill” was runner-up in Culture magazine’s annual Scary Dairy Contest (fellow NEHW member Dave Goudsward took first place for “Michael, is that You?”)—he’ll be receiving a basket of cheesy goodies just in time for the Holidays! NEHW member Stacey Longo also entered (her story’s untitled).

ARE YOU NOT NANO-ING THIS YEAR DUE TO CONSTRAINTS—AND UNHAPPY ABOUT IT? KEEP THESE POINTS IN MIND!
Ah, it’s that time of year—NanoWrimo, in which those of us who are looking for a lot of diversion for 30 days hole up in our homes, coffee shops or libraries and party on with our laptops and AlphaSmart Neos to write 50,000 words in 30 days.
I’ve done Nano a few times, and won most. In fact, my novel Bad Apple, which is forthcoming from Vagabondage Press Books early next year, was sort-of a Nano project—I wrote the whole thing in nine days in September of 2005, then used Nano as my first revision timeline. The novel has undergone heavy and extensive revisions since then, a few times over—but wow the fun I had doing it. When they said ‘literary abandon,’ they weren’t kidding.
This year, I won’t be joining the happy throngs of burgeoning novelists—I’ve just got too much on my plate. I actually feel guilty about that. Writer Stacey Longo, though, shared some advice with a classroom full of writers recently that reminded me that whether I do Nano or not, that doesn’t make me any less of a writer—I’m a writer all year, and that this November there are things I can do that keep me in touch with that part of myself.
For example:
n Re-read your favorite writing advice book.
n Read a book you’ve been meaning to get to forever and haven’t had time.
n Clean out your writing files—chuck old drafts, notes, etc. that you don’t want.
n Do some revisions.
n Hang out with a writing friend.
n Research places to submit your work, then if you have anything, submit, submit, submit.
n Get your future story ideas in order.
So, if you’re NOT doing Nano this year due to lack of time, or energy, or craziness in your life, and you’re feeling some loss—remember, there’s always next year. Until then? What she shared with the class reminded me there are other things we can do in November to keep that feeling of loss and disappointment at bay—and that if you’re a writer then you’re always at it no matter what the calendar says.

Culture: the word on cheese, a magazine for cheese enthusiasts, retailers and the like, is running its second annual “Scary Dairy” Contest with a winner announced on November 4.
If you’re looking for something short (and cheesy) to read in between the trick or treaters, head on over there and enjoy the current entries. My short “Slow Grill,” written specifically for this contest, is over there, and so are stories by friends and New England Horror Writers members David Goudsward and Stacey Longo. The other entrants I don’t know, but all of the stories are fun to read.
Writer? I think there’s also still time to enter—entries must be 500 words or fewer. Take a shot at it! The cheese basket they’re offering as a prize sounds YUMMY.
